Barbara Ann Johnson Tucker (June 28, 1944 โ April 8, 2026), acclaimed gospel vocalist and devoted woman of faith, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, surrounded by those she loved. Born in Conroe, Texas, to Ernest James and Annie Eloise Lawson Johnson, she began singing in childhood and went on to an international music career. She was a graduate of the Jack Yates High School and Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.
She is remembered for her performances in the Broadway production The Great White Hope, Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage in Washington, D.C., and at the state funerals of Congressman Mickey Leland and Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. She was best known as the first artist to record the gospel classic โOrder My Steps,โ with Glenn Burleigh, and remained dedicated to ministry through music throughout her lifetime.
Her legacy of faith, music, and service will continue to live on through the work of the Barbara Johnson Tucker Foundation in conjunction with EAC Global. Created to aid in the preservation of her gift, further the mission of her ministry, and to inspire future generations of sacred music artists.
